Like del.icio.us but I'd rather have it on my own website, thank you very much.

linux screen cheat sheet

Let's say that you are running a command on a linux shell and it's taking a long time. Further, you need to disconnect your session to get on the bus or your session gets disconnected because your net connection is flakey.

Screen to the rescue

Imagine if you could just disconnect from your shell session and then reconnect. Well, you can :)

Screen Cheat Sheet

Command What it does
ctrl+a+c make a new screen
ctrl+a+n "next screen down the line"
ctrl+a+p "previous screen down the line"
ctrl+a+k kills current screen until last one then you're out
ctrl+a+d leave, but leave them running and re-attachable
screen -ls 31619.something.else (Detached)
screen -r 31619.something.else re-attaches to that session

So - that quick guide should provide the commands you need in the order you need them. And then you'll be more productive and then you'll be happier because you'll be doing it efficiently :)

how to think like a programmer if all you know is cooking

So, not many people understand programming. Here's a funny/interesting way to describe programming in terms of cooking. I like it.

Similarly, I once heard an analogy about asking a software engineer to build a bridge from San Francisco to Hawaii. A software engineer would say "no problem" and then do:

while (notInHawaii) {
buildbridge();
}

Clearly that won't work in general, but in software it does. That's what makes software so interesting in a world of cheap computing resources.

Best Denver Tea Shop

My post about angies list kicked off such a storm of comments I figured I'd try it out again:

What is the best Denver Tea Shop?

Looking at the Fun Denver wiki there's not a whole lot of great entries under "Tea Houses" aside from the one on capital tea. So...what is the best place?

Please - add a comment and let me know your favorite Tea Shop in Denver.

New teas available at Capital Tea

I'm working from Capital Tea this afternoon and they have two new teas:

Black Jasmine Creme Tea
Black tea with jasmine flowers and vanilla

Immortalitea (get it, immortality tea)
Grean tee with lemon, rosemary and sage.

Of course I just had a chai which I love, but these new teas seemed like interesting flavor combinations.

Salida Colorado Real Estate - Better than Leadville, Mas Buena que Buena Vista

My friend Michael Hawley started doing Real Estate in Salida, Colorado a little while ago. If you don't know, Salida is located at the exit (Salida means exit in Spanish) of a high mountain plain in Colorado that includes Buena Vista, Poncha Springs, and several other cities. It's the "banana belt" of Colorado meaning that temperatures in Salida remain pretty moderate all winter long. There's still skiing at Monarch - one of the few low price, low pressure, high quality ski mountains left in Colorado and snow-shoeing and other activities aplenty all winter. But you can also ride your mountain bike on a nice winter day.

Mike is a really great guy and I definitely recommend him for any Salida real estate needs. And really, if you're looking for mountain living in Colorado it's hard to think of a better location than Salida.

Energy Consumption in our House

I just tabulated (and published) our history of bills from Xcel Energy for the last 12 months. I used google spreadsheets just to try it out and it's pretty neat. The "publish" feature makes it easy to share the thing, the I wish it would also give a "download in ODS, XLS, RTF, CSV format" link.

A couple interesting things to note:

  1. We have a gas meter in our basement and Xcel checks it every year (or so) and then makes estimates based upon previous usage and current weather. So, we moved into this house 2.8 years ago. In that time they only came to read the meter once. Our usage is a bit less than the previous tenants (we use a schedule on our thermostat and don't have any kids) so this usage reflects a mix of their habits and our habits and the estimate.
  2. Electricity is under a similar deal in terms of usage and estimates
  3. Xcel offers a program called wind source (linked to my previous posts) that costs a little more (about $5/month for us) so our rates are a little different than most

Golden Holistic Medicine - Kaycie Rosen, Colorado Naturopathic Doctor

Our good friends Kaycie Rosen and her fiancee Steve Grigel just moved down to Colorado after spending a few years living in Anchorage. We're really excited to have them around again and, perhaps even more exciting, is that Kaycie is a Naturopathic Doctor and just opened the doors of her own Holistic Medicine Clinic in Golden, Colorado.

I'm a big believer in small business in general and of course in healthy lifestyles so seeing a medical clinic using a holistic approach so close to me in Denver is a really great thing. Kaycie had a ribbon cutting ceremony which included some delicious foods. She has also shared these recipes on her website such as this Quinoa Salad Recipe - both healthy and delicious!

She's going to be writing more about Holistic Living in Golden Colorado in her blog, so you may want to subscribe to the RSS Feed or the newsletter.

Welcome, Kaycie and Steve!

Edit: Kaycie's business is growing and she just added Golden Cliffs Chiropractic to her office.
